Honda Valkyrie Rune – one mean mutha mo'sickle.

ROAD WARRIOR: It's the meanest-looking motorcycle this side of a Mad Max movie.

Pictures: DAVE ABRAHAMS

It's the motorcycle you'd imagine the Terminator riding. It's the biggest, baddest, longest, heaviest, most outrageously styled street bike yet built by a major manufacturer.

It has more chrome than a Swedish lounge and more street cred than Vin Diesel.

It's Honda's Valkyrie Rune and it could only have been built in America.

The Rune was derived from the T2 concept bike, styled by Honda's California design studio in 2002 and the art deco look, with its swoopy lines, 1940s Pontiac-style radiator shell and deeply valanced mudguards, is pure Malibu custom. It's powered by Honda's biggest ever motorcycle engine, the 1832cc flat six from the current Gold Wing.

As are the acres of chrome and dozens of heavy-duty components made by hand from lumps of solid steel and aluminium.

It's powered by Honda's biggest motorcycle engine, the 1832cc flat-six from the current Gold Wing that's rated at a not very impressive 87kW – but with a mind-boggling 167Nm of torque at only 4000rpm.

Willie G Davidson would kill for numbers like that.

The drive is taken through the stock five-speed Gold Wing transmission and shaft final drive, every external component dripping with chrome, and there's so much custom steelwork on the bike that, even without a fairing, panniers or a pillion seat, it's only 3kg lighter than the parent Lead Sled.

The front suspension is by trailing link; Honda's California style mavens would hate me for saying this but it's a beefed-up version of the time-honoured Vespa front end
Every single ergonomic component has been specially made for this outrageous scooter
. The rear wheel is looked after by a simplified version of Honda's Pro-link monoshock set-up, which isn't chromed because you can't see it.

Stopping a 361kg motorcycle takes more than reasonable braking power so the Rune is fitted with twin three-pot callipers in front and a twin-piston unit at the back, on monster callipers. All three are tied together by Honda's linked braking system, as on the VFR800.

Every ergonomic component has been specially made for this outrageous scooter, from the triangular headlight through the hand-carved switchgear to the digital dash - which tells you no more than you need to know.

All it gives you is speed, distance and fuel level, plus a few warning lights in a separate (chromed) pod on the upper triple clamp.

There's no tail light as such; instead two banks of LEDs are let into the rear mudguard, 18 in all, each side of the numberplate mount - which means that if you put a standard South African motorcycle plate on the Rune you'd obscure the brake lights, rendering the bike very, very unroadworthy.

Only 1000 of these very special motorcycles have been built at Honda's plant in Maryville, Kentucky and they are available to special order only. When I approached divisional manager Basil Forssman, he explained that Honda South Africa would not be interested in bringing one in due to the logistical hassles of providing spares and service back-up for a motorcycle which has nothing in common with any other Honda in the country.

So, if you have a serious need to intimidate the boulevard on the meanest motorcycle this side of a Mad Max movie, you'll have to approach a parallel importer. Somebody in Paarl, 55km north of Cape Town, did; Robbie Perold of Boland Bikes has just uncrated this black Rune, the only one in South Africa, for a customer.

It looks even bigger and meaner in the flesh than it does in the photos, with an almost tangible presence – it projects a brooding toughness just standing still, mostly because all the cosmetics are so heavily structured.

As they say in Kentucky, it's one mean mutha mo'sickle.

And, before you ask, it costs R266 000. And, before you put up your hand again, a rune is described in the OED as "any letter of earliest Germanic alphabet; similar mark of mysterious or magic significance".
